FAQ

Why is Granny in the driver seat?

Because 40 is the new 60. Because we live in an ageist society which dismisses anything that is not shiny bright and more than 5 minutes old. Yet in some corners of the universe, in little pockets of sympathy and of common sense, older people are valued for their experience and opinions.

Shouldn’t this blog  be called … ‘Grannyinthedriver’sseat’… ?

If Granny owned the seat, then yes. However, if the seat is just being labelled then, no. OK, very technical.                                                                                                                                                The truth is that I thought an apostrophe would be more of a hinderance than a help.

What is Grey Power?

an Australian political party and lobby group, first registered in 1983. At the federal elections of 1984 and 1987 it ran candidates, but on both occasions these candidates (who included former Liberal cabinet minister Bill Wentworth) did poorly. The group was designed to represent the elderly vote, advocating issues dealing with aged care and a mature perspective on national policy; hence the name “grey power”. Currently a party without any representation in any state or national parliament.

The idea survives in Australia as an online forum  http://nationalseniors.com.au   and as a catch cry in the media whenever issues are debated which have an impact on older members of the community. In an election year, expect it to be freely tossed about by politicians wanting your vote.
